Marisa Alberto Period: 3 Endocrine System
Major functions of the endocrine system
secrete hormones into body fluids
hormones diffuse into the bloodstream
works with the nervous system to maintain homeostatics
Compare and contrast steroid vs non steroid
Non-steroids: -amines, peptides, proteins, or glycoprotiens are produced from amino acids -Receptors have a binding site and activity site
Steroids: -derived from cholesterol -receptor bind with DNA and activates specific genes
Homeostatic mechanisms of the hormone regulation
Negative feedback: -control hormone release -hormone levels remain fairly constant
Nonsteroid: -receptors have a binding site and an activity site
Steroid- lipid soluble pass through cell membranes -hormone -receptor complex binds with the DNA and activates specific genes
Diseases associated with the endocrine system
Hyperthyroidism: -overcavity of thyroid gland -causes high metabolic rate (restlessness and overeating in adults)
Gigantism: -GH oversecretion during childhood
Hypothyroidism: -underactivity of thyroid gland -causes low metabolic rate (fatigue and weight gain in adults)
Acromegaly: -GH oversecretion in adulthood
Pituitary dwarfism: -GH deficiency during childhood
Type 2 diabetes mellitus: -insulin is produced but is not recognized by cells
Type 1 diabetes mellitus: -insulin production decreases or stops
Major endocrine glands and their functions
thyroid: -help control caloric intake and helps regulate blood calcium level plus bone growth
parathyroid: -increases blood calcium ion concentration and decreases phosphate ion
concentration
pituitary: -is attached to the hypothalamus
pineal: -secretes melatonin
pancreas: -secretes hormones as an endocrine gland
-digestive juice into the digestive tract as an exocrine gland
reproductive: -produces estrogen, progesterone, and gonadotropin includes ovaries, testes, and placenta
adrenal: -enclosed in a layer of adipose and connective tissues
thymus: -secretes thymosins
kidney: -secrete erythropoietin for blood cell production
