Mike Mendez p.2 Endocrine System
Major Functions of the Endocrine System
Regulation of Metabolism: Hormones such as insulin and glucagon regulate glucose metabolism, while thyroid hormones control the body's metabolic rate.
Maintain Homeostasis: Hormones helps maintain a stable internal environment by regulating processes such as blood sugar levels, electrolyte balance, and body temperature. Also works with the nervous system.
Growth And Development: Growth hormone regulates growth during childhood and other hormones promote reproductive growth.
Major endocrine glands/organs and their functions (separate by region/ body cavity)
Brain
Hypothalamus
: Producing and releasing hormones that regulate the secretion of hormones from the pituitary gland.
Pituitary Gland:
secretes a variety of hormones that regulate other endocrine glands, and Growth.
Target Organs
:
Target Organs:
Neck
Thyroid gland
: Produces thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) that regulate metabolism, growth, and development.
Target organs
:
Parathyroid glands
: Produce parathyroid hormone (PTH), which regulates calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood.
Abdominal Cavity
Pancreas
: Produces insulin and glucagon, which regulate blood sugar levels.
Adrenal glands
: Produce hormones such as cortisol, aldosterone, and adrenaline, involved in stress response, and metabolism.
Pelvic Cavity
Testes
(male): Produce testosterone and sperm, regulating male sexual development and fertility.
Ovaries
(female): Produce estrogen, progesterone, and eggs, regulating female sexual development, menstrual cycle, and fertility.
Thoracic Cavity
Thymus
: Produces thymosin and other hormones involved in the development and function of the immune system, particularly T lymphocytes (T cells). Also Shrinks With Growth.
Target Organs
Targets White Blood Cells.
