VERTIGO
Obsession can link to romantic delusion through the narrative. The narrative contributes to the prominent theme of obsession displayed throughout the film. Vertigo’s structure follows a cyclical path as it both starts and ends with Scottie’s attempt at saving somebody from a great height- first, his fellow policeman, and last, Madeleine/Judy. The obsession is portrayed most heavily during the final act of the film, when Scottie and Judy meet. Scottie becomes infatuated with redeeming his past actions, and saving Madeleine once and for all, that he forces Judy to become Madeleine, and this obsessive nature becomes the very thing that actually kills Judy. The recreation of Madeleine additionally contributes to the cyclical narrative as most of the Madeleine arc repeats itself due to Scottie’s need for redemption. This can also link to the theme of romantic delusion as Scottie refuses to see Judy for her true self, and only ever sees Madeleine within her.
