Effects of Climate Change
Agriculture & Food Security
Affect production of crops and types of crops grown in certain area.
Water for irrigation and solar radiation affect the growth of plants.
Hits poorest countries severely as there is a reduction of agriculture products.
UK agriculture
Climate affects production differently according to areas.
Southern warm and dry weather has negative impact on production than northern and eastern wet areas.
Eastern upland areas have production rise because of warm temperature but lowlands suffer from droughts causing loss of crops and tree damage.
Water Stress & Water Insecurity
Water scarcity creates competition for water resources among people and countries. It can lead to serious conflicts.
Global warming leads to a reduction in water availability, hydropower potential, and changes flow of rivers supplied by melting water from mountain ranges.
UK water resources
Floods cause climate change problem. Puts stress on water recourses, biodiversity and natural habitats.
Extreme winters with heavy rainfall have risk of flash flooding and flooding.
Declining summer river flows, drought and reduced groundwater replenishment poses a threat to our water security.
Sea Levels
Sea level rise is due to thermal expansion and melting of ice sheets. Sea level has been expanding at a rate per year. Can fuel more intense tropical storms.
UK
Effects people living in coastal areas. Storms, floods and coastal erosion due to sea level rise.
Destruction of economy for people living there.
Affects access to quality of goods and services.
Some crops can now be grown that couldn't previously.
Less need to heat room temperatures.
Better transportation system and fewer accidents due to less bad winters.
Ecosystem and Biodiversity
Species are at risk due to rising temperatures.
Health
Higher levels of some air pollutants, increased transfer of diseases through unclean water and contaminated food.
Flooding is suitable for disease-carrying insects. Rise in malaria.
Effusion of greenhouse gases depletes ozone layer which protects us from sun radiations. Leads to increase in skin cancer.
