Podzol Soil
-
Profile
-
-
slow rate of weathering of parent material ( granite and schist ) results in a shallow infertile soil, due to acidity and lack of humus
Low bacterial activity ( animals, biota, etc ) due to cold temperatures
Little evapotranspiration ( water being evaporated from vegetation) due to low temperatures, and high rainfall.
Results in iron and other minerals being leached downwards to leave the A horizon ash-grey coloured ( zone of eluviation )
Where iron is deposited, forms a rust coloured hard pan which limits drainage - known as iron pan
Iron pan prevents penetration of plant roots and the drainage of podzol, resulting in waterlogging
Lower down the profile, aluminium, iron, clay and humus are washed in ( zone of illuviation) and deposited in B horizon
C horizon forms from a range of parent material, derived from acidic parent rock ( granite and schist )
Podzols are easily recognised due to distinct layers/ horizons due to it being too cold for organisms which leave the soil unmixed
