The raw sap reaches the leaves, carbon dioxide enters the holes on the back of the leaves, these holes are called stomata. In photosynthesis, water, salts and carbon dioxide combine and use sunlight to produce organic matter. Oxygen is produced and is released to the atmosphere. Photosyntheis occurs on chloroplasts, that contain chlorophyll, which captures energy from sunlight and allows photosynthesis to occur. The mixture of water and organic matter is called elaborated sap.
