What is ESP?
It is designed to meet specific needs of the learners.
PURPOSE
: Learning the language in relation to the learner needs to do in their job.
CENTRED ON
: grammar, lexis, register skills, discourse and appropriate genres.
COULD BE APPLIED FOR
: EAP, EBP, EMP, among others.
HOW IMPORTANT IS ESP?
The increase in vocational learning skills and training throughout the world.
GLOBALIZATION
English is the language to communicate internationally.
THE ROLE OF THE ESP TEACHER
Teacher or language consultant.
Course designer and material provider.
Researchers, not just gathering material but also understanding the nature of the ESP specialism.

Evaluator, constantly not only materials and the course design but also set assessment tests and achivement tests.
Not to be an expert, however it is relevant to have understanding of the subject area.
Be informed about the students culture.
To have different strategies because of the different levels of English in the classroom.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ESP LEARNERS
There are two categories of ESP learners
Those who already work in their specialism or at an advanced stage of training
Those who are pre-work or young (16-18) do not have much detailed knowledge of their specialism.
Learn English to achieve specific knowledge.
Involve skills that are different from the skills involved in learning a language.
Study and work at the same time (tired)
some of them are required to take the course
do not have the same level of English
WHAT DO ESP SPECIALISM HAVE IN COMMON?
They will not have much in common with each other.
They have specific needs.
They have to know and understand vocabulary and documents. Furthermore, they often use diagramas and number base information sources.
They have an identificable working environment.
They will reflect and evaluate their own performance and work in a team.
BE AWARE OF THE DIFFERENCES
Different needs
Different learning styles
Different genres of texts and interaction.
WHAT GENERAL APPROACHES WILL THE ESP TEACHER NEED TO TAKE?
Think about what is need. Do not just blindly follow a grammar syllabus.
Understand the nature of your learners area or vocation. Talk to them about their jobs, persuade them to visit the facilities, labs, factories, etc.
Spend time working out their language needs
Use contexts, texts and situations from the students subject area (
REAL or SIMULATED)
in order to involve them in the language.
