different cultures
individualistic cultures are less likely to follow orders

the person goes along with the group even though they may not agree.
internalisation
a person is placed in a situation in which they do not know how to act so they look to others and copy them in hopes of fitting in.
identification
similar to compliance, a person changes their behaviour or beliefs to fit into a peer group, though this behaviour is only temporary.
deindividuation
The process in which a person loses their own personal identity when trying to be in a crowd or group.

examples
in riots people feel like they are part of the crowd and thus unseen, so they may act more extreme.
nazis who wore uniforms felt more deindividuised and so they would act more violent towards people such as the jews. the larger the group the more agressive they would become.

Male university students were split into 'guards' and 'prisoners' in a simulated prison study, they quickly conformed to their role, becoming equally agressive to the guards or prisoners
bystander affect
definition
when people choose not to help in a situation, assuming someone else will help (diffusion of reponsibility)
otherwise known as bystander apathy
examples
german citizens during WW2 did not help the jews because they saw that no one else was helping, and so the diffused the responsibility onto someone else.
