Gatsby and Daisy
American Dream
Gatsby's entire life is built around his vision of life with Daisy, in his mind, she is the final piece in completing the american dream. He lives his life in her gaze: everything he does has her in mind.
-
Gatsby is devoted to Daisy, he takes responsibility for her reckless driving 'but of course i'll say i was' chp7, he is committed to his own devotion to her despite her not being devoted to him.
Whilst Gatsby seems to believe this devotion paves the way to his dreams 'he stretched his arms across the dark water', they pave the way to his fall ('the dark water').
He loses sight of the fact that Daisy chose Tom, she forgot about him, she cannot give him the same devotion.
When Daisy does not reciprocate his love, Gatsby dies, showing his commitment to an idealistic and romanticised perception of love.
