The Allies Meet and Debate
The Versailles Treaty
France showed little signs of agreeing with Wilson's 14 points
They also wanted to strip Germany of all it's war related power
Finally, a compromise was reached, and the Treaty of Verssailles between Germany and the Allied powers was signed,
this adopted Wilson's fourteenth point
the treaty also created the League of Nations
This league was to be an international association whose goal would be to keep peace among nations
Also punished Germany
Lost substantial territory, had severe restrictions placed on its military operations
the harshest was Article 231, known as the "war guilt" clause.
this placed sokle responsibility for the war on Germany's shoulders.
as a result, Germany had to pay reparations to the Allies
all of Germany's territories in Africa and the Pacidic were declared mandates or territory of theLeague of Nations
Wilson came up with peace proposals called the Fourteen Points.
The first four points were designed to end secret treaties, have freedom of the seas, free trade, and reduced national armies and navies
The rest of the points were suggestions for new borders.
The main idea behind these points was self-determination
This meant that people should live freely based on their choice of government.
The foureenth point was centered on creating an association of nations to promote peace.
