A Bloody Stalemate
War in the Trenches
Armies dug trenches to protect themselves
Mostly on the western front
Along the French border
Didn't gain much land
Very deadly
New weapons killed more people, but didn't make the war go faster
Battles were very deadly with very small results
Verdun, 300,000 casualties 4 miles gained
Somme, 500,000 casualties, 5 miles gained
Leaving trenches wasn't safe
Had to cross no-man's-land
Staying wasn't safe either.
Always the threat of artillery shells
The trenches were bad places to live, too
War
Why were trenches developed? Why aren't they used anymore?

The Conflict Grinds Along
On a two war front
Germany's strategy was called Schlieffen Plan
Was about attacking and defeating France in the west and then rushing east to fight Russia
Believed it would work because Russia lagged behind in the railroad system thus taking longer to supply its front lines
Knew they need to win a quick battle over france.
