War in the Trenches
Technological Innovations
By the early 1915 the Western front had dug miles of trenches to protect themselves.
This started trench warfare which is were soldiets fight from trenches.
This style of warfare traded lots of human life for small amounts of territory.
Concept: Innovation
Life in the trenches was hell they had to sleep in mud and were never clean. They also never had fresh food to eat.
During The Course of The War, Many Technological Innovations Were Developed, Which further helped Contribute to the Bloodshed
There were rats and animals everywhere
The British Mark I was the first ever tank to see combat.
Mark I tanks went into action for the first time on September 15th, 1916 on the Somme. Eight others were shipped out to Palestine and saw action at Gaza, the first time tanks were ever used in a desert setting.
The space between the trenches was no mans land and if you were to storm the other side they would meet you with rounds of machine gun rounds.
They were not always safe in the trenches because artillery would shoot and colapse trenches and it also made it unbreathable.
The Conflict Grinds Along
Question: What Effect did All of the new Technology have on the War
On the battlefield, American forces fought using airplanes, long-range artillery, Motorized Ambulances, gas, mobile X-ray equipment, wireless radio, and other tools of war That would Go on to be used in later wars.
New invention became more effective in killing soldiers. By the end of the massive attack each side lost 300,000 men.
During WW1 the central powers were at a major disadvantage.
After this the Allies started in to help france and bring more troops in to war. On the first day they lost 20,000 troops.
They had to fight a two fronted war.
Their plan to defeat this was called the Schlieffen Plan.
This would entail beating France in a quick war and then rushing over to fight Russia before they invaded Germany.
There was not really that much gained in the trench warfare. The tenches had a long term consequence on the emnviorment.
This plan failed because they were unable to beat france quickly and they ended up having to retreat.
