Thesis statement: your overall impression of them, how are they presented, why, what is Priestley's overall message
Mr Birling
A stern business man who thinks very highly of himself and believes he knows more about anyone else regarding how to live their life. Extremely capitalist man who likes to take control. Arrogant and unlikable
-

He fired Eva Smith from his factory because she took control of Suffragette related movements where she demanded better pay - in doing so he worsened her living state, leaving her in absolute poverty, even more than before.
-
No, he doesn't change. At the end of the play he's seen to be relieved and angry at the fact that the Inspector was not real and feels to take zero responsibility for his actions.
-
He is selfish, ignorant and arrogant. He cares only about his success and disreards other people. He thinks very highly of himself and values social status mor ethan anything. He likes to take control and listens to nobody else.
-
"a heavy-looking, rather portentous man in his middle fifties with fairly easy manners but rather provincial in his speech"
Mrs Birling
She is cold and unsympathetic, prejudiced, hypocritical and selfish. She follows traditional values strictly and is heavily capitalist. She is over ruled by her husband due to gender but doesn't seem to mind much.
-

-
-
-
Won't let anyone boss her around: "You have no power to make me change my mind". And wants to have control so only regrets not having "asked him a few questions"
-
-
-
At her charity for wome where she works; she turned Eva away when she was accidentally pregnant and vulnerable
No, she doesn't change. When finding out that the Inspector was a fake, she feels no remorse for her actions and only cares for her social status.
She is a cold woman who twists her words in order to achieve what she wants in life. She only cares for herself and does not care for anyone outside of her family, so when she turned out to have condemned her own son she was speechless.
-
"about fifty, a rather cold woman and her husband's social superior"
Sheila
-
Yes, she goes through a metamorphosis as she begins to mirror the Inspector's attitude and accepts moral and social responsibility, understanding that everyone matters and they should all be held to account for their actions
-
-
-
She is strong-minded and quick-witted. Knows right from wrong and has begun to understand the way of life. She knows how to accept responsibility and how to be the bigger person sometimes. Knows how to stand up for herself.
-
-
She is a spolied young Uper Class girl who always wants everything for herself. She is very proper and has not learnt about life yet and therefore fllows in her parents' footsteps
-
"half serious, half playful"
-
-
She had Eva Smith fired from her job, leaving her jobless and in absolute poverty with nowhere to turn to. She used her social status to fire Eva from Milwards because she thought she was prettier than her - jealousy. This was straight after Eva had just been fired from Mr Birling's factory
-
Gerald Croft
-
he partially change because they accept their own responsibility but he doesn't change his capitalist attitude. At the end he was the one who discovered that the inspector was not real.
-
He is heavily capitalist and Upper Class. Cares about his social status and succeeding. Tries hard to appeal to Mr Birling. And he feels heavily proud of himself.
Cheated on Sheila with Daisy and he spent the whole summer with her and they fell in love. Then he left her so he could get back to his real life - made sure she would be okay for a while
Sad and a little impartial. He loved her and she loved him. Angry at himself for having cheated and then letting her go just to find out she has committed suicide.

Eric Birling
-
-
-
He is a shy boy being welcomed into manhood, he is from the upper class but does not really fit in. He is misunderstood and tries to be included by the more respected but fails. Nobody listens to him or takes him seriously. He has upper class ideologies but they are changed to be more lenient and understanding of the changing ideologies - he's leaning more towards socialist views than capitalist - to an extent.

-
He raped and impregnated Eva. He then stole £50 from his father's business to give to her to try and help her in this situation she found herself in.
