drug must be nonionized to cross barrier, ionized to exert effect in Na channel
Blocks small C fibers first, then A fibers. Recovery order is reverse.

USES
lidocaine - most used, rapid onset
articaine - dental, safer than lidocaine
bupivacaine - epidurals, labor, postop pain. May cause cardiotoxicity
