Alicia Resmer, Period 5: The Cardiovascular System
Major Functions of the Reproductive System (male and female)
Male: Produce androgens (ex: testosterone), promote spermatogenesis, transport into female reproductive system
Female: Produce gametes, Produce sex hormones, Maintain fertilized eggs until birth
Anatomy of Male Reproductive Structures
External: Penis, Testes, Scrotum
Internal: Prostate Gland, Urethra, Vas Deferens, Bladder, Seminal Vesicle, Ejaculatory Duct, Prostate,
Anatomy of Female Reproductive Structures
External:Clitoris, Labia Majora and Minora
Internal: Fallopian tube, Ovary, uterus, cervix, vagina
Hormones of Reproductive System (male and female)
Male
LH: Stimulates testosterone production
FSH: Stimulates spermatogenesis
Testosterone: Regulate sex drive, Muscle Mass, etc.
Female
Estrogen: Promotes Reproductive health
Progesterone:Thicken uterine lining and create good environment for fertilized egg
LH: Spurs pregnancy and helps w hormone production needed to support pregnancy
FSH: help control menstrual cycle
Events of the female hormonal cycles
Menstrual: Hormones signal uterus to shed lining, Period, 3-7 days
Follicular: 13-14, Pituitary Gland release hormone to stimulate production of follicles of Ovary surface, uterus lining thickens, egg matures
Ovulation: Egg matured, release from Ovary and goes along Fallopian tube, usually 2 weeks before period, 16-32 hrs, Most likely to get pregnant here
Luteal: corpus luteum release progesterone and estrogen, thicken in preparation of pregnancy, if fertilized egg implants in uterus lining the corpus luteum keeps up progesterone production which keeps thick lining, if not the progesterone and estrogen levels drop causing uterus lining to shed and period to occur
Methods and Classification of contraceptives
Behavioral: Abstinence, Calendar Rhythm
Mechanical: IUD, Condoms, Oral contraceptives, Patches, Hormonal Ring
Surgical: Sterilization (Fallopian tubes tie or snip Vas deferens)
Chemical: Injection, Pill
Disorders associated with the Reproductive system (including STI's)
Viral (direct contact): Gonnorhea, Chlamydia, Syphilis
Parasitic: Trichomoniasis
Bacterial(skin-to-skin, bodily fluid): HPV, Genital Herpes and warts, HIV/AIDS
