Hepatitis
: Viral disease that can develop very mild illness with few or no symptoms
Signs/Symptoms
: white, yellow, or green discharge in penis, burning sensation when urinating
Treatment/Prevention
: not sharing needles, vaccine given at first 24 hours of birth
Transmission
: ingestion of food or water contaminated with fecal matter or infected person, contact with blood, semen, or other body fluids
Trichomoniasis
: parsitic STI that is caused by trichomonas vaginalis; most common, curable STI
Treatment/Prevention
: single dose of single antibiotics, medication, pills can be taken by mouth
Transmission
: passed from infected person during vaginal, anal, or oral sex
Signs/Symptoms
: 70% do not have signs, inflammation, itching, burning, redness
Gonorrhea
: sexually transmitted disease that can infect both men and women. Can cause infections in the genitals, rectum, and throat
Signs/Symptoms

: medication, abstinence, get tested

Chlamydia
: common infection that can infect men and women. Can cause serious permanent damage

: medication and antibiotics, use of latex condoms
AIDS/HIV
: virus that attacks the body's immune system; human immunodeficiency virus acquires immunodeficiency syndrome

: flu-like symptoms, swollen lymph nodes, fever, fatigue

Genital Herpes
: sexually transmitted disease caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 1 or type 2

HPV/ Genital Warts
: most common sexually transmitted infection; can cause cervical cancer or other cancers of the vulva, vagina, penis, or anus

: genital warts, someone can have no signs or symptoms
Treatment/Prevention
: no treatments for actual disease but are treatments for health problems caused by HPV, vaccines recommended for all boys and girls ages 11 and 12
Transmission
: having vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someones with virus
Syphilis
: sexually transmitted disease that can have very serious complications when left untreated.
Treatment/Prevention
: antibiotics, abstinence

: sores, skin rash, swollen lymph nodes, fever
Transmission
: direct contact, syphillis sore during vaginal, anal, or oral sex, infected mother to unborn baby
PID
: pelvic inflammatory disease is an infection of a woman's reproductive organs; complication caused by some STDs
Signs/Symptoms
: pain in lower abdomen, fever, unusual discharge, pain or bleeding during sex, burning sensation during urination

: antibiotics, abstinence

: multiple sexual partners, douching
Bacterial Vaginosis
: condition that happens when too much of certain bacteria get in the vagina

: thin white or gray vaginal discharge, pain ,itching, or burning in the vagina, fish odor, burning when urinating

: antibiotics, abstinence, limiting number of sexual partners

: multiple sexual partners, douching

Diaphragm

Internal Condom
: condom placed in vagina to keep sperm from entering; 21 out of 100 pregnancies; side effects include allergic reaction and irritation
Pill
: chemical option of birth control; 8 out of 100 pregnancies; side effects include spotting for first few months, nausea, breast tenderness
External Condom
: condom placed on penis; 13 out of 100 pregnancies; side effects include allergic reaction or irritation
Injectables
: chemical procedure which prevents ovaries from releasing an egg; 4 out of 100 pregnancies; side effects include weight gain, may reduce cramps, spotting or no period
Fertility Awareness
: monitors fertility signs and abstain or use condoms on fertile days; 24 out of 100 pregnancies
IUD
: mechanical procedure which inserts a device into the uterus; .2 out of 100 pregnancies, side effects include lighter or no period, heavier or longer period, discomfort with placement

: behavioral method; pull out penis from vagina before ejaculation; 20 out of 100 pregnancies
Male Sterilization
: less invasive procedure which cuts vas deferens; .15 out of 100 pregnancies, side effects include pain, bleeding, infection

: put in vagina; 28 out of 100 pregnancies; allergic reaction or irritation
Female Sterilization
: surgical procedure white ties fallopian tubes to prevent eggs from fertilizing; .5 out of 100 pregnancies; symptoms include pain, bleeding, infection or other complications
