Reproductive System Jordyn Miller Period:2 - Coggle Diagram
Reproductive System Jordyn Miller Period:2
Female Reproductive System
Functions to produce and maintain sex cells, transports eggs to fertilization site, providing housing for developing fetus, deliver, feed & nurture offspring & produce female sex hormones (oocytes)
Male Reproductive System
develops & maintains organs for production of offsprings & delivers sperm to female
Emission: movement of sperm cells and accessory glands
Ejaculation: involves forcing semen through urethra
Spermatogenesis: production of sperm
Female Reproductive Organs
Ovaries
Primary sex organ; produces sex cells & hormones
consists of medulla inside and Cortex outer layer
Primordial Follicles
consists of primary oocyte, surrounded by follicular cells
Uterine Tubes (Fallopian Tubes)
Normal site of fertilization, leads from ovaries to the uterus
Uterus
Receives embryo & maintains fetus development; uterine wall consists of inner Endometrium layer, Middle Myometrium layer, and outer Perimetrium layer
Vagina
Conveys uterine secretions, receives penis during intercourse, & serves as a birth canal; partially covered in a membrane called Hymen
Outside of vagina called vulva,
Labia Majora: enclosed & protects internal organs
Labia Minora: Folds of vagina
Clitoris: contains erectile tissue
Male Reproductive organs
Testes
produce sperm and hormones, surrounded by scrotum
Seminiferous Tubules
Produces sperm continuously through life
Vas Deferens
sperm leaves from the testes, to the epididymis, to the vas deferens, unites with seminal vesicle & empties into ejaculatory duct
Interstitial Cells
lies between seminiferous tubules & produce male sex hormones
Prostate Gland
structure surrounding urethra at base of bladder; secretes milky fluid, citrate, a nutrient for sperm
Semen
reproductive fluid transported through urethra
Scrotum
The outer skin sac of the testes that protects and regulates testes temp
Penis
conveys urine and sperm Corpora cavernosa & Corpus spongiosum responsible for erection
Prepuce: Loose skin removed during circumcision
Glans penis: Head/ Tip of penis
Hormones
Gonadotropin- releasing hormone (GNRH)
secreted by hypothalamus and triggers the production of gonadotropin
Luteinizing Hormone(LH)
promotes development of interstitial cells of testes, which secretes testosetrone
Follicle stimulating Hormone (FsH)
stimulates sertoli cells of seminiferous tubules to respond to testosterone FsH and testosterone stimulate spermatogenesis
Testosterone
stimulates development of male reproductive organs; responsible for voice deepening, body hair, increased muscle etc
Reproductive Diseases
Gonorrhea
Sexual infection caused by bacterium and if untreated can cause infertility
Aids/HIV
Chronic disease that damages immune system and can lead to death if left untreated
Chlamydia
infection that may not cause symptoms but can lead to permanent damage
Genital Warts (HPV)
infection that causes warts on various body parts
Bacterial Vaginosis
caused by overgrown vagina bacteria and usually occurs during childbearing years
Herpes
sexual disease infection marked by genital sores and pain
Syphilis
sexually transmitted diseases that starts as a painless sore and can cause serious health problems if left untreated
PID
Pelvic inflammatory infection of upper reproductive organs when bacteria spreads from vagina to womb
