PROBLEM / CONFLICT
Food/Wealth/Money
physical
social/relational
emotional/psychological
spiritual
Rich man vs. Abraham
both were wealthy but very different
rich man
his problem was not
wealth and money
His problem: not
believing in God
He was not persuaded
by the truth
Did not repent of
his covetousness
He failed to believe
in the gospel
He did not help
poor Lazarus
He was not persuaded
by the good news
of the gospel
Abraham
the father of many nations
the father of the faithful
the friend of God
Abraham chose to
believe in God
He granted a promise
to inherit Canaan
Righteousness is inputed
to him for his faith
Abraham was blessed and
his name changed
Abraham believed in God
and everything that comes
from God
Abraham's name:
blessing from God
CHARACTERS
Lazarus
Living in the poor
only fortunate people get
to eat meat once a week
Hard to get food
waiting from crumbs that
fell from the rich man's table
Food was eaten with hand.
bread used to wipe hands were thrown away
Lazarus was waiting for that bread
Suffering
He was lying at the gate
He was probably crippled
He was unable to move on his own
Surrender to God
Lazarus: God is my help
He was a beggar
He was covered with ulcers
God is near to the broken hearted
Lazarus' physical need made him much
more sensitive to his deeper spiritual need
Rich Man
Lived in Luxury
He was clothed in fine purple linen
He has a house with a gate
Feasted in Luxury
his meal cost+ many times a man's daily wage
He ate like this everyday
He fed on exotic and costly dishes
Broke God's Comandment
He broke the 4th comandment
4th commandment: not to work on the Sabbath
It also says to labour for 6 days
Prideful
His love for money has bloomed into
self-justifying and self-centered pride
LESSON LEARNED
The rich man's suffering
is evident about the
reality of judgement at
the afterlife
Unlimited punishment: Hades
Hades and its heat and fire
Desperation: He asked Abraham
to show mercy on him
Self-centered mentality: He still views
Lazarus as a servant, asking him for water
Do not be deceived: God
can not be mocked
How we live in the present
moment determines
our future
No pain no gain
Jesus: betrayed, punished, crucified, but ascended to heaven
Judas: loves money, greed, betrayed Jesus, gets financial gain, but committed suicide
No possibility of reversing the situation.
No opportunity for the rich man and his family
Don't let your fortune close you off from
seeing and reaching out to meet the need for others
