Unit 6: Sampling
- Pop.: Aggregate of all elements with common characteristics relevant to the marketing research problem.
- Census: Complete enumeration of pop. elements.
- Sample: Subgroup of pop. elements chosen for study.
- Sampling Frame: Representation of target pop. elements, typically a list or set of directions for identification.
- Urban Sample: Districts → Strata → Towns & Colonies → Households.
- Urban Oversample: Metros → Wards → Colonies → Households.
- Rural Sample: Districts → Strata by rural % → Towns & Colonies → Households.
- Design errors: Selection, measurement errors.
- Administrative errors: Questioning, recording errors.
- Response errors & non-response errors.
- National manufacturer assessing wholesaler inventories to prevent retailer shortages.
- Regional pickle manufacturer in Hyderabad testing new flavors.
- Probability Sampling (Prob. S.)
- Simple Random Sampling (SRS)
- Stratified Random Sampling (StRS): Divide pop. into strata → SRS in each.
- Systematic Sampling (SysS): Assign numbers → Determine interval → Select start.
- Cluster Sampling (ClS): Divide pop. into clusters → Select clusters → Include all/sample elements.
- Multi-stage Sampling (MS S.): States → Cities → Hospitals → Patients.
- Non-Probability Sampling (Non-Prob. S.)
- Convenience Sampling (CS): Selection bcs ease.
- Judgment Sampling (JS): Selection based on expert opinion.
- Quota Sampling (QS): Control categories → Selection bcs judgment.
- Snowball Sampling (SbS): For estimating rare characteristics.
- Central Bank credit card usage study to explore the relationship between card usage and socioeconomic characteristics of 400,000 users.
- Sample should accurately represent pop. & achieve statistically significant results (↑ accuracy & significance, ↓ margin of error).
