Reproductive System Everardo Juarez P.2
Male Reproductive Structures
Male sex cells are sperm
Primary sex organs
Testes: produce sperm and hormones
ovoid structures suspend by spermatic cord outside trunk in a sac, the scrotum
Seminiferous tubules are lined with a stratified epithelium that contain spermatogenic cells that give rise sperm cells
Channels leading from the seminferous tubulues carry sperm to the epididymis, which continues into the ductus deferns
Accessory (secondary) sex organs
Internal and external reproductive organs
Internal
Nurture and transport the sperm cells
epididymis
tightly coiled tube connected tot the testis, leading from the testis to the ducuts deferens
sperm become motile and develop the ability to the fertilize an egg
ductus deferens
muscular tube leading from epididymis into body cavity
united with seminal vesical duct and empties into the ejaculatory duct
seminal vesical
saclike strucutre attacted to the vas deferens near the base pf the urinary bladder
Prostate gland
secertes a thin milky fluid that contains citrate a nutrient for sperm and prostate specific antigen, an enzyme which helps to liquefy semen
Bulbourethral glands
are small glands located inferior to prostate gland
External
scrotum
pouch of skin and subscutaneous tissue that houses the testes
protects and helps regualate the tempt. of the testes
penis
contains specialized erectile tissue
cylindrical organ that conveys both urine and semen to the outside
Female Reproductive structures
Female sex cells are oocytes
Primary sex organs
orvaries
soild, ovoid strucutres located within the lateral wall of the pelvic cavity
the ovaries are subdivided into an inner medualla and an outer cortex
medulaa: is made up of connective tissues, blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, and nerves
cortex: contains ovarian follicles and is covered by cuboidal epithelium
Secondary (accessory) sex organs
Internal
Uterine tubes
near ovaries, they expand to form an infundibulum wirh fingerlike fimbriae on its margin
cells lining the tubes have cilla
normal site of fertlization
Uterus
Upper two-thirds of the uterus, the body, has a dome-shaped top, the fundus
Uterine wall has three layers: an inner, glandular endometrium, a muscular wall or myometrium, and and perimentrium
lower one-third of the uterus is the cervix, which extends into the vagina
Vagina
vaginal orifice is paratillay covered by a membrance called the hymen
External
labia minora
flattened, longitudinal folds between the labia majora
form a hood around the clitors
clitoris
small projection at anterior end of vulva, between labia minora
corresponds to the penis and has a similar structure
contains coloumns of erectile tissue
labia major
anterior ends meet to form the mons pubis, which covers the public symphysis
vestibule
space enclosed by the labia minora, into which the vagina and urethra open
vestibular glands lie on either side of the vaginal opening; correspond to bulbourethral glands and provide lubrication
Male hormones of the reproductive system
is controlled bu hormones secreted by the hypothalamus, anterior pituitary, and testes
homornoes control
development and maintenance of secondary secual characteristics
sperm cell production
Hypothalamic and Pituitary Hormones
Gonadotropin-realeasing hormone (GnRH)
secreted by the hypothalamus
triggers the production of gontropins from anterior pituitary gland
luteinzing hormone(LH): promotes development of interstitial cells of the testes, which then secrete male hormones
follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH): stimulates sertoli cells of seminiferous tubulues to respond to testosterone
Male sex hormoes
Androgens
male sex hormones;testosterone is the most important one
Actions of testosterone
stimulates development of male reproductive organs
responsible for male secondary sexual characteristics
Events of the female hormonal cycles
Disorders associated with the reproductive system
Methods and Classification of contraceptives
intrauterine devices (IUD's)
hormal IUD's
copper IUD's
hormal methods
birth control patch
birth control injections
birth control pills
birth control implants
hormal IUD's
natural methods
fertility awareness methods
withdrawal methods
Barrier methods
cervical caps
contraceptivee sponges
diaphragms
condoms
permanent methods
tubal ligation (female sterilization)
vasectomy (male sterilization)
Major functions of the Reproductive system (male and female)
