Psychology - Memory
Key Terms
Long-term memory (LTM) - your memory for events that have happened in the past from anywhere between 2 minutes and 100 years ago.
-
Short-term memory (STM) - your memory for immediate events, which will dissapear if not rehearsed.
Sensory register - A place that holds information gathered through your senses for a very short amount of time, perceiving information before it is stored or processed by any other memory store.
Coding - The way different memory systems store information, by converting that information into a suitable format for our brain.

Phonological Loop
-
-
Is responsible with storing auditory information, preserves information in word order.
-
Articulatory process - holds words that are looped, referred to your "inner voice."
Visuospatial Sketchpad
Holds visual and spatial information. Visual referring to what things look like and spatial referring to the relationships between things.

Research
Baddeley
Gave four groups of participants different lists of words to remember. These lists were either semantically similar/dissimilar or acoustically similar/dissimilar.
Semantically similar = great, large, big, huge
Semantically dissimilar = horse, worn, books, peel
Acoustically dissimilar = dirt, lose, grand
Acoustically similar = cat, car, cab
Participants were asked to recall back the list of words in order right after they were told it. (STM)

Retrieval Failure
Tulving
Cues can help us remember certain memories, recall is better when cues are similar.
-
-
-
Interference
Proactive Interference
-
-
Example
If someone is learning how to play tennis, but have previously learnt how to play badminton, their knowledge on how to play badminton could interfere with this.
-
Retroactive Interference
-
-
Example
If someone is dating someone called "Sarah" and they refer to their ex-girlfriend as Sarah instead of Sam.
-
Our LTM has an unlimited capacity and duration, but sometimes we can forget information from our LTM.
This doesn't mean that these memories are not available, they are just not accessible.
