Practice exercise: pausing
For this practical exercise, you're going to read a passage of text aloud multiple times. Each time you'll vary how and when you pause.
Take a book from your bookshelf and pick any two pages to read aloud. As you read, pause every time you see some punctuation.
Now, read it again and try varying the length of pause. Pause for one second when you come to a comma, two seconds when you come to a full stop, and three seconds when you move from one paragraph to another. This isn't necessarily how you would read this aloud to another person, but it will give you some idea of how often you might want to pause when speaking in public.
Now read it several more times, changing how and when you pause to cover the following options:
Pause before a key message
Pause before a key word to signal what's about to be said is really important.
Pause after a key word to let the word sink in.
Pause when you 'change direction'.
