Pathophysiology
Infection of the lung parenchyma by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites.

Assessment Findings
Fever, productive cough, chest pain.
Tachypnea, crackles or decreased breath sounds on auscultation.

Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
Pathophysiology
Obstruction of pulmonary arteries by blood clots, usually originating from deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Treatment
Anticoagulant therapy (e.g., heparin, warfarin) to prevent further clot formation.

Assessment Findings
Sudden onset dyspnea, pleuritic chest pain.
Tachypnea, tachycardia, hypoxemia.
Signs of DVT (e.g., swelling, pain, redness) may be present.
