How Do Biopsychosocial Factors Affect Persuasion?
Biological Factors
Age
Young people are easier to persuade as they are still growing and hence they are more open minded and susceptible to change their views.
Older people are harder to persuade as they have experienced life and are more set in their beliefs and less susceptible to change their views.
Sex
Women are typically more susceptible to persuasion as the societal structure over the generations has enforced the belief that women are more passive and more likely to conform whereas men are the headstrong ones and the decision makers.
Neurochemistry
An individual with more dopamine is more likely to be impulsive and take risks and hence more likely to be persuaded.
Psychological Factors
Attention
If a person has a lower attention span they are less likely to be persuaded as they are less focused on the persuasion being conveyed.
Attitudes and Beliefs
If a person has predisposed attituded or beliefs surrounding a topic and they are being persuaded to change their views on that topic they would be less likely to change their views especially if they have a negative attitude or belief surrounding the topic
Memories
An individual with potential traumatic memories surrounding certain topics or things will be less likely to be persuaded to engage with the topic or thing. For example an individual who had a traumatic experience with dogs when they were younger will be less likely to be persuaded by an advert promoting adoption for homeless dogs.
Social Factors
Socioeconomic Factors
An individual from a lower social class may be more vulnerable and more likely to be impulsive
Education
Someone who is more educated would be less likely to be persuaded as they have more knowledge and are able to make informed decisions about topics. This is in contrast to people who are less educated hence they may not have the required knowledge to understand the topic and as a result are more likely to be persuaded.
Culture
A person's culture could view certain topics as taboo and hence a person who is of that culture would be less likely to be persuaded about those topics.
Persuasion
Persuasion is a process in which a person or entity tries to influence another persons or group of people to change their beliefs or behav iours.
