Pertinent Information: Triggers include infection, stress, and poor compliance with insulin therapy.
Hyperglycemic Hyperosmolar State
-
Assessment Findings: Severe hyperglycemia, profound dehydration, and altered consciousness.
Treatments: IV fluids, insulin therapy, and electrolyte management.
-
Hypoglycemia
Assessment Findings: Shaking, sweating, confusion, tachycardia, loss of consciousness.
Pertinent Information: Common in diabetics, can be caused by excess insulin or inadequate nutrition.
Treatments: Immediate oral or IV glucose, long-term adjustment of diabetic therapy.
