Changing colors of leaves - Coggle Diagram
Changing colors of leaves
What causes the color?
Several pigments in leaves are responsible for color:
chlorophyll, carotene, xanthophyll and anthocyanins
All are important for plants and leaves development
They all produce a different pigment
Chlorophyll is the pigment in chloroplasts of plants that reflects green light
Plants use the energy absorbed by chlorophyll in photosynthesis to
produce food for plant growth and development
It's the same chlorophyll we drink
Chlorophyll is continually
broken down during photosynthesis and being replenished by the plant.
Pigments that reflect
orange and yellow light
respectively
Carotene
Xanthophyll
Both are present in the
chloroplasts, with chlorophyll enabling the plant to absorb a wider range of wavelengths of light and thus capture more
energy.
When is the best time for autumn colors?
In Tennessee, autumn color begins first at the higher elevations in response to cooler temperatures and shorter
days.
The color progresses to the lower elevations, extending the duration of fall color
The average peak period of fall
color in Tennessee ranges from the last week in October through the first week in November.
Two trees recommended for a wide array of leaf color
are sugar maple and sweetgum.
Sugar maples turn yellow
then orange and sweetgum color can vary among individual trees from yellow to red and purple.
How does the weather affects the color?
Cool, but not freezing,
temperatures favor anthocyanin production
Like mountainous regions, northern regions
Germany, USA, Mexico, Europe
Temperature,
light and water supply are the primary factors that influence the synthesis of carbohydrates (sugars) that favors anthocyanin formation and bright fall color
Mediterranean, beaches, warm places, summer or spring, rainfall
Southern regions, Cancun, yucatan, brazil
Early frost is
more likely to kill leaves, making them turn brown and fall
sooner from the trees
This can happen in every place that has dry climate like México (Aguascalientes) or most likely in the north states of the United States or in Canada
High altitude places are most likely as well to have this kind of frost like Alaska
What happens in Aguascalientes?
Aguascalientes generally has warm to hot temperatures throughout the year, with average highs ranging from 20°C to 32°C
In the fall season, temperatures gradually begin to cool down from the summer heat, creating conditions that are favorable for the synthesis of carbohydrates in plants.
