Social policy
-
1944 Butler act
-
-
Tripartite system - grammar, secondary modern, technical
Critique
- 11+ exam is culturally biased (favours M/C)
- Very few technical schools were built - bi-partite system
- More grammar schools in some areas
- Grammar schools got more funding
- Labelled pupils as 'failures'
- Female scores were lowered
-
-
1988 Baker act
- View of parents = had more control over child's edu.
- Curriculum = core subjects
- Recruiting pupils = open days/evenings
- Govt. in power = conservative
- Exam results = put into a leagure table - used by parents
- children regularly tested = age 7, 11, 14 &16
Critique
- The N/C is too burgucratic
- what is taught is decided by state
- League tables are problematic
- Only private schools are exempt from the N/C
