Sports organisation and development key terms
UK Sport
The UK sport environment includes national, governmental organisations, national governing bodies of sport and disability organisations. Regional and local organisations promote participation alongside.
government involvement
Government departments are involved in the organisation of UK sport include; Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), Department for Education (DfE) and Department of Health (DfH).
DCMS
Promotes Great Britain as a highly creative and exhilarating place. DCMS aims to be innovative in its efforts to attract visitors by promoting British Culture and arts to stimulate growth. DCMS also funds Sport England to promote lifelong participation among 14-25 YO.
DFE
Has responsibilities for English education and children’s services. In a sporting context, the DFE is involved in the initiatives outlined in the DCMS section.
DFH
DFH aims to help people live an enhanced quality of life for longer. The DFH recognised the importance of sport and exercise medicine in chronic disease management. It also trains staff in sport and exercise medicine.
National Governing Bodies
Across England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland, there are many NGB’s of sport who take responsibility for managing a particular sport. Each NGB has expert knowledge of its particular sport. NGBs are usually independent and self-appointed.
National disability sport organisations
National Disability Sports Organisations have responsibilities for the expansion and marketing of sporting opportunities for specific disability groups e.g. UK Sports Association for People with learning disabilities, Wheel Power
lottery funding
The National Lottery engages with 12 funders who then independently decide which projects should receive lottery funding. The following organisations are examples of who decides where funding should be received: Sport England.
They also have partnership arrangements to help fund Olympic & Paralympic Sport via UK Sport.
Sport England
Sport England helps individuals and community groups to develop lifelong engagement in sport. It get people involved in sporting activities and provides opportunities for people to really shine. uk sport
UK Sport invests National Lottery and government funding into Olympic and Paralympic Sport, to help athletes achieve their full medal winning potential.
UK Sport has no direct input into school or community sport programmes.
sport and recreation alliance
The Sport and Recreation Alliance is a trade association for sport and recreation governing and representative bodies. It represents 320 members, such as The FA, The RFU, and UK. It was formerly known as the Central Council for Physical Education (CCPR).
county sport partnerships
There are 45 county sports partnerships covering England.
They are networks of local agencies. All agencies are committed to working together to increase the numbers of people taking part in sport and physical activity through
local council
Local councils work with a range of partners such as Sport England, Sport Scotland, Sport Wales and Sport Northern Ireland to promote the quantity and quality of sporting opportunities in a particular area, along with developing joint investment opportunities. They also work with NGBs towards common goals.

Youth Sports Trust (YST) is an independent charity aiming to positively change the lives of young people via sport; this is predominantly done by helping schools provide high-quality PE sessions.

AfPE is the only physical education subject association in the UK. It provides professional development opportunities, journals, employment opportunities, insurance cover, health & safety and legal support.
Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA)
CIMSPA is the professional development body for Sport and physical activity in the UK. It provides professionals with leadership and support, training and development opportunities.
English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS)
EFDS is a registered charity which supports a broad range of organisations to increase the involvement of disabled people in sport.

The School Games comprises both Intra and Inter-school competitions leading to a School Games County Provision/Offer as well as a biennial National Finals event. Putting physical activity and competitive sport at the heart of schools and providing more young people with the opportunity to compete and achieve their personal best.
UK coaching certificate
NGBs support coaches at all levels, from youth to coaching elite athletes. For 31 sports, this development is underpinned by the UK Coaching Certificate for coaching badges.
international olympic comittee
The IOC is an international, non-profit, non-governmental organisation. It is the supreme authority of the Olympic movement. The IOC organises the modern Olympic Games and Youth Olympic Games, held in the summer and winter, every four years.
