- Some acts may be deviant but not criminal (shouting in a library)
- Some may be criminal but not deviant (keeping excess change)
- Some may be considered both (murder)
Norms
Lay down general principles/guidelines, norms, specific/socially accepted standards that govern peoples behaviours in particular situations
Moral Codes
used to describe a set of basic rules, values & principles held by an individual, group, organisation or society as a whole :
Police Codes of Ethics:
- written guide to the core principles & standards that officers are expected to uphold in their work
- Cover 9 policing principles: Accountability, Integrity, Openness, Fairness, Leadership, Respect, Honesty, Objectivity & Selflessness
Informal Sanctions
- Frowning upon behaviour
- Name Calling
- Ignoring Behaviour
- Labelling
- Grounding
used when rules are not formally written down & are 'unspoken'
these are broken when others show dissaproval

Positive Sanctions
Reward for behaviours that society approves of, can be formal or informal
All sanctions are a form of social control -> ways that society seek to control our behaviour & ensure that we conform to its norms and behave as others expect
Offence Types
Summary Offences: less serious e.g. speeding, dealt with by a magistrates court
Indictable Offences: more serious e.g. murder/rape, dealt with by crown court
