sampling methods
systematic sampling
Disadvantages: Time consuming, people may pull out by the time research is carried out, lowers representativeness and generalisability. The sampling frame won't always provide useful information therefore can be biased
-
advantages: everyone has the same chance. Reliable - no researcher bias, preferred by positivists because of its scientific, objective nature
Stratified Sampling
Advantages: Can ensure that each group is represented - Represnatitive Not biased - Representativeness is preferred by Positivists because of its scientific, objective nature - Reliable
Random - dividing the research population into different sampling frames and people are sampled from each frame
Disadvanatges: Time consuming, people may pull out - Lower Representativeness and generalisability. The sampling frame may not give specific groups to include - lowers representativeness and generalisability if some groups have a large number of people then they are more likely to be chosen / biased
quota sampling
advantages: useful when there is no sampling frame, more representativeness than other non-random samples - target a range of groups - representative easy to set targets
-
Disadvanatges : researcher may br biased towards a certain group - lowers representativeness, no sampling frame - less scientifc, more difficult to repeat, lowers reliability , numbers needed may not be representative of target population
Snowball sampling
Advantages: useful when there is no sampling frame, good to use for studies with difficult groups to access or a specific type of person - validity and representativeness, easy if one person acts as a gatekeeper, allows access and can build up raport
-
Disadvanatges : not represnetative - no sampling frame - sample will be made up of the same type of people - lowers representativeness, biased/subjective - insider researchers
purposive sampling
Advanatges: useful when there is no sampling frame and good when there is a specific type of [ersoned needed
-
Disadvantages: not representative - no sampling frame -csample will be made up of the same type of people - lowers representativeness biased/subjective - insider researchers
volunteer sampling
advantages: useful when there is no sampling frame, sampling will be made up of the same type of people
non random ; making the most of situations / opportunities the research population is likely to be found
Disadvanatges: not representative, no sampling frame, sample will be made up of the same type of people, lowers representativeness biases/subjective - chosen by the researcher
