Maria Palacios P2 Immune System
Major Functions of the Lymphatic System
maintenance of body fluid through collecting and transporting it back into circulation
absorb excess fluids
absorbs dietary fats
production, maintenance, distribution of lymphocytes
fights pathogens
Lines of Defenses
First Line
Purpose
fighting infections; protect us against invading pathogens
skin
hair
mucuous
tears
Second Line
Purpose:
destroyers invaders in a generalized w/o targeting specific individuals
inflammation
fever
cells
proteins
Third Line
Purpose
eliminate specific pathogens that have been encountered in the Immune system before
Cellular immunity/ response
Humoral immunity/ response
Lymphatic Organs/ Functions
Red bone marrow: produces formed elements of blood (LEUKOCYTES)
Thymus: recognizes "self" and provides a place for the maturation of T-lymphocytes
Spleen: traps foreign particles and removes damaged/ old erythrocytes
Lymph nodes: filters lymph and traps foreign particles
Major Functions of the Immune System
protects the body from foreign pathogens
remove dead r damaged cells/ tissues
recognize and remove abnormal "self" cells
fights disease-causing changes in the body
Humoral/ Cellular Responses
Humoral
produces antigen-specific antibodies
primarily driven by B cells
Cellular
not dependent on antibodies
primarily driven by mature T cells, macrophages, and the release of cytokines
Antigens and Antibodies
Antigens
toxin/ foreign substance
