Maguire study, design, type of data, sample, ecological validaty,…
-
design
-
-
strengths -less time/money involved than a within subjects design and increased external validity because more participants are used.
weaknesses - individual differences in participants can sometimes lead to differences in the groups' results.
type of data
-
Strengths - it is easy to understand the results and come to conclusions as it it all numerical statistics
Weaknesses - we are unable to get a detailed picture of the thoughts, feelings and reasons behind the participants actions
-
sample
-
Strengths - all PPts had been drivers for atleast 18 months, all were healthy and had good psycological profiles
Weaknesses - all male, very small size
(not genrelisable)
ecological validaty
-
weakness - not true to real life but in this study this does not apply in this study as the control inhibits the demand charicterists
-
-
-
usefulness
Strengths - Backs up studies on brain plasticity as the MRI scans show the posterior hippocampus in the taxi drivers are larger than those in the control group
weaknesses - The study cannot be generalised as its only males and the ethnocentrism restricts it's usefulness
-
validity
-
Strengths - The study can be easily replicated as the study is on the brain and they used the MRI which can be done by others
Weaknesses - The study is done by all males who are right handed which would be different to anyone who isn't right handed and doesn't drive a taxi in London
-
nature vs nurture
-
nurture as the study is looking at how taxi drivers
have larger posterior hippocampi thanks to their job not their genetics. the corralation also showed the lenth of time as driver compared to the size of the posterior hippocampi
we are unsure as to wether the reason these taxi drivers to this job due to the large posterior hippocampi or weather is it the job that changed it.
method
quasi experment
strenths -more generalizable and have better external validity as it is done in a natural enviroment
weaknesses - The lack of random assignment means that
we are unable to completly get rid of experimenter bias and the study is not genrelisable to the entire populas.
