Germany was left at disadvantage because of the partition of colonies

Each country made its alliances by its own, this was the "Armed Peace"

France and Germany remained hostile, great nationalist tensions between the Balkans.

The alliances
Two blocs of alliances were created
The Triple Alliance
Germany, Italy and Austria-Hungary.
Italy abandoned it while the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria joined
The Triple Entente
Russia, France and Great Britain, Italy later joined the Triple Entente
Other countries participated but very unequally
Belgium, Serbia and Montenegro were invaded by Germany, and suffered a lot during the conflict
The USA entered the war in 1917 and played a decisive role
Romania and Greece joined due to developements on the Balkan front
Japan declared a war on Germany due to its imperialist ambitions in Asia an d the Pacific
