2R Book Plan, Source of the illness: lie at the roots of our civilization…
2R Book Plan
There is serious illness: things are not working, there are major breakdowns
-
-
Political crisis (of leadership, of cohesion)
-
Polarization, culture wars and identity politics 🔥🔥
-
-
-
Rising tensions e.g. Ukraine, Taiwan, Israel (compared to sense e.g. 10/20y ago that these would get solved ...) 🔥🔥
International cooperation to handle major risks e.g. nuclear, climate crisis, AI, etc 🔥
-
Economic crisis
-
Tech regulation especially of big tech, AI etc
Gig economy (precarity, poor pay)
-
-
Healthcare, education, etc seem to be creaking and won't be funded - issues around demographic transition 🔥🔥
NOTE: if we just there are problems well ... there have always been problems. Full answer: problems are serious i.e. global catastropica (in a way we will define e.g. existential, will get worse etc) and foundational ie. go to root of how we operate as a civilizational

The source of the illness: lie at the roots of our civilization. In our ways of thinking and being. We are in decay phase of a major paradigm
-
Ways of being, thinking, organizing and making that are part of modernity no longer function and are even problematic (may be killing us!)
-
Let's give examples of how given issue (in previous section) relates to the paradigm (core views and values)

Source of the illness: lie at the roots of our civilization. In our ways of thinking and being. We are in decay phase of a major paradigm
We're experiencing this crisis because we are experiencing the end of an ideological period / cultural paradigm ... That we will call modernity
A paradigm is a core set of onto-social structures i.e. deep beliefs of a culture. Paradigms include both culture and institutions. Most visible signs of a paradigm are things like laws, technologies etc ...
?? Do we need this stuff here. Would prefer a short aside and reference to an appendix if people want more.
-
-
Many good things ... and now exhausted and becoming unfit for purpose. (Paradigms create problems that cannot be solved within that paradigm ... etc) -- how does this happen, and why?
We live in an increasingly complex (economic / technological) world-system (global, transnational, digitised, post-industrial...)
But it has become too complex to manage / govern from within the modern paradigm - ie our current culture/institutions are not developed enough / are not up to the task
-
-
The (systemic) circumstances have changed, but our culture & institutions haven't (at least not enough)...
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
Ways of being and thinking give rise to systems that in turn give rise to the dynamics and crises we are experiencing ...
-
Reason can't solve the prisoner's dilemma, it can't provide meaning and purpose
