Chelating agents, CaNa2EDTA, Dimercaprol, Succimer, Penicillamine,…
Chelating agents
Chelating agents are chemical compounds that react with metal ions to form a stable, water-soluble complex. They are also known as chelants.
Chelating agents have a ring-like center which forms at least two bonds with the metal ion allowing it to be excreted.

Specific chelating agents bind iron, lead, or copper in the blood and can be used to treat excessively high levels of these metals.

Dimercaprol
-
Therapeutic uses
• Acute arsenic, gold, and mercury poisoning
-
-
Penicillamine
Therapeutic uses
-
• Chelates heavy metals, but more toxic, less potent, and less selective than other options
-
-
-
Deferasirox
-
Therapeutic uses
• Treatment of chronic iron overload due to transfusion
• Treatment of non–transfusion-dependent iron overload
