Alanna Garcia period 5. Lymphatic/Immune system
Disorders associated with the Immune system
Location of Lymphatic organs and their functions
lymph nodes:
function:cleanse lymph and site for lymphocyte activation and proliferation
location: inguinal, axillary and cervical regions
spleen:
function: cleanse blood and removes aged or defective red blood cells/ site for lymphocyte activation and proliferation/ stores platelets, monocytes, and irons
location: left side of abdominal cavity just below stomach
thymus:
function: site of T cell maturation
location: inferior neck
malt
function: prevent pathogens from penetrating mucous membranes/ site for lymphocyte activation and proliferation
location: mucosa of respiratory tract, genitourinary organs, & digestive tract
red bone marrow:
function: site of B cell maturation
location: distal side of bones
tonsils:
function: gather and remove pathogens in food and air
location: ring of lmyphatic tissue around pharynx
Innate(natural) immune defenses and Adaptive(acquired) immune defenses
Artificial vs. Naturally acquired immunity
Passive vs. Active immunity
Major functions of the Lymphatic & Immune systems (include BOTH)
Lymphatic system returns fluids leaked from blood vessels back to blood; consists of 3 parts
lymph: fluid in vessels
lymph nodes: cleanse lymph
network of lymphatic vessels (lymphatics)
Antigens and antibodies
Cells involved in the immune system and their functions
Purpose and example of First, Second and Third line of defense
First line(Innate nonspecific defense system): external body membranes (skin & mucosae)
Second line(nonspecific): antimicrobial proteins, phagocytes, & other cells
Third line(Adaptive Specific defense system): attacks particular foreign substances takes longer to reach than innate
Humoral response and cellular response
