1. Succession crisis
Harald Hardrada - King of Norway for 20 year and a very good solider. He believed the British throne was taken form his father and rightfully his and he had the support of Tostig
Edgar Aetheling - blood relative but was 14 and had no money, land or soliders
William of Normandy - distant cousin of Edward the confessor and there was strong links between British royals and Normandy. After quelling rebellions with Edward he was promised the British throne because of this Harold Godwinson swore an oath of loyalty to him (1064).
Harold Godwinson - highest Earldom in Britain and had brought peace to Wales on behalf of Edward. He had strong links with the church and was married the sister of the earls of Northumbria and Mercia (Edwin and Mocar)

2. Harold's Oath
English view - in 1064 Edward sent Harold to Normandy to confirm his promise to William but his ship was blown of course and he was captured. William ensured his freedom by forcing Harold to swear an oath of loyalty
But on the 6th of January 1066 (the day after Edwards death) Harold is crowned King - this REALLY upsets William and the other claimants to the throne
Norman view - in 1064 Edward sent Harold to Normandy to confirm his promise to William but his ship was blown of course and he was captured. William ensured his freedom and they get along well, with William gifting him with presents. In return, of his own free will Harold swears an oath of loyalty to William
