Sikh Beliefs
God and Creation
Sikhs believe that God created everything but Sikhism DOES NOT have a creation story – they accept scientific views of creation but believe that it is all part of God’s will
-
-
Sikhs also think God can be known through creation because God is IMMANENT (present within everything) and has no limits.
For Sikhs all of creation is valuable to God but humans are special because they can know the difference between right and wrong
It seems contradictory to say God is both with qualities and without them and transcendent and immanent.
God and the Mool Mantra
-
The Mool Mantra
-
- is the opening paragraph of the Guru Granth Sahib
-
-
The MOOL MANTRA is important because it sets out the most important Sikh beliefs. This is why the first words of it are part of the Sikh religious symbol.

Being Human
-
Life is a cycle of birth and death but the aim is to escape constant rebirth and become one with God. This is called MUKTI
Sikhs believe they can achieve mukti by living the right kind of life but accept this can take many lifetimes
-
Sikh virtues
1) truthful living 2) compassion and patience 3) contentment
4) humility and self control
5) love
6) wisdom and courage
The FIVE KHANDS
-
Knowledge – devoting time to God will allow a person to know God. This can make a person see how much knowledge needs to be gained so can encourage humility
-
Grace – at this stage God gets involved in the development of a person and enables a person to grow spiritually
-
Karma, Rebirth and Mukti
Sikhs believe the cycle of rebirth will continue to repeat itself until their soul is liberated and becomes united with God
Sikhs believe all beings, including animals, have souls
-
Being reborn a human is seen as a sign that a person had good karma in their previous life. A person now has a chance to make progress towards freedom from rebirth because they can work to build up more karma
Bad deeds generate karma too so a Sikh must try to meditate on God’s name (NAM JAPNA) and serve others
MUKTI is the Sikh goal. It means liberation. It is when an individual soul joins God. No one can describe exactly what it is like
NEGATIVE MUKTI is the belief that a person must rid themselves of all the things that stand in the way of getting close to God e.g. temptation
