Christian Moral Action - Coggle Diagram
Christian Moral Action
Costly grace
To be saved, it is necessary to have belief in Jesus
-
Eg. if you believe in Jesus, you will listen to him, so you will love your neighbour, which requires sacrifices, such as giving money to charity
So to be saved, it is necessary to pay a huge cost
Analogy / quote
-
Shows that to follow Jesus, sacrifices must be made
Weakness
-
As God is omnipotent, he can choose to send you to heaven or hell regardless of what you have done
-
Humans are flawed with the original sin and akrasia, so cannot do good things by themselves (eg. giving money to charity)
Overcoming
-
For example, only believing in God means that you won't follow his laws and be a good person
-
As God is omnibenevolent, he wouldn't want us to believe anything that makes the world a worse place
-
Solidarity
A good Christian will try to realise the will of God on earth (reconcile the reality of God with reality of the world)
The only way to do this is by following the example of Christ in any situation (Jesus is God, so we can follow his actions to know reconcile the reality of God with the reality of the world, eg. Martin Luther)
-
-
-
Weakness
-
-
Due to epistemic distance, we don't know what he would do ('The finite has no capacity for the infinite')
-
-
Fight against cause
-
The best way to love your neighbour is not to just treat the effects of injustice, but also treat the causes of it
So Christians should work against the causes of injustice rather than just helping people after injustice has occured
Analogy / quote
'We are not to simply bandage the wounds of victims beneath the wheels of injustice, we are to drive a spoke into the wheel itself'
Fight against the causes of suffering, rather than just helping with the effects
Duty to God
A good Christian will try to realise the will of God on earth (reconcile the reality of God with reality of the world)
The only way to do this is by following the example of Christ in any situation (Jesus is God, so we can follow his actions to know reconcile the reality of God with the reality of the world, eg. Martin Luther)
The example of Jesus suggests that we should have duty to God, not the state
So the only way to be a good Christian is to have duty to God, not the state
Analogy / quote
-
Jesus calls over a man who says he must first bury his dead father, following the legal responsibility he has
-
Weakness
-
-
'Everyone should submit themselves to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established'
-
Overcoming
-
But someone is only a proper authority if they recognise that authority comes from God, and they resist trying to become an idol in themselves
So in cases where the person does not do these, there is no requirement to obey them
