Tissue insulin resistance in combination with insulin secretion deficiency.
▪ In patients with insulin resistance and/or β-cell deficiency, the abnormalities are mild or intense.
Insulin is derived from β-cells but is inadequate to overcome resistance → Glycemia.
▪ Patients with type 2 diabetes do not need insulin to live, but 30% or more of them benefit from administration of the hormone to control hyperglycemia.
▪ Patients with type 2 diabetes do not usually present with ketoacidosis, but may form ketoacidosis as a result of physiological overload situations, such as infections, or drugs that aggravate insulin resistance, such as corticosteroids.
