Lymphatic/ Immune system Jordyn Miller P:2
Functions
Lymphatic
maintain fluid balance & absorption of dietary fats from gastro tract to bloodstream for metabolism or storage
Immune
to protect the body from microbes or chemicals
Organs
Lymph Nodes
bean shaped filters found in varies body parts like, armpits, chest, groin, abdomen, & throat
Bone Marrow
soft spongy tissue that produces red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets
Thymus
in the chest between the lungs; makes T lymphocytes (white Blood cells) which help fight infection
Spleen
Largest lymphatic organ; makes leukocytes, filters blood, stores it and destroys old blood cells
Lymphatic vessels
Tubes that form complex network throughout the body.
White blood Cells
made in the bone marrow; found in blood & Lymph tissue
Defense Lines
1st Line of Defense
Mechanical Barrier (skin & mucous). Manages risks with regs & standards
2nd Line of Defense
Chemical Barriers ( Enzymes, ph, salt,) includes natural killer cells, inflammation, phagocytosis, fever. Identifies emerging risks
3rd Line of Defense
Adaptive immunity; cellular immune response, Humoral immune response. Provides high level of consistency and expectations
Diseases
Scabies
Caused by an infestation of the skin by the human itch mite Symp: Intense itching, Pimple like Rash, Bumps or Redness
Cause/Risk:Direct contact with someone with it, Contagious,
Treat: Prescribed Medication, Oral meds, Prophylactic treatment
Hemorrhagic Fever
Single Stranded RNA virus that affects many organs
Cause/Risk: Encountering someone with it, Traveling, contagious Symp: Fever, Fatigue, stomach pain, pale/cold skin
Treatment: No standard treat, Antiviral drugs
Ebola
A virus that causes severe inflammation & tissue damage throughout the body
Cause/Risk: Saliva, semen, sweat, urine
Symp: Fever, aches, loss of appetite
Treatment: Ebonga, providing fluids & electrolytes, Meds
Chicken Pox
an itchy rash or bumps throughout the body Sympt: Rash, itchy, headaches, blotchy skin, fever
Cause/Risk: Person to Person, people with HIV or cancer, transmitted through saliva
Treated with calamine lotion or vaccinated
African Sleeping Sickness
Sleeping sickness caused by microscopic parasite
Cause/Risk: Traveling to Africa, tsetse fly, mother to child
Symp: Fever, Severe headache, swollen lymph nodes, fatigue
Treat: melarspol. Antiparasitics, enzyme inihibitors
Toxoplasmois
infectious disease of a parasitic infection. Sympt: Eye pain, Burned vision, light sensitivity
Cause/ risks: Food borne, animal to human, mother to child
Treatmeant: Medications, Long treatment needed, eye medicine
Tuberculosis (TB)
A disease cause by the spread of germs that affects the lungs Cause/Risk: Spread of germs, bad Hygiene, Bad Ventilation
Symp: Persistent Cough, Bloody cough, Night Sweats
Treatment: Antibiotics, INH Medication, Inhaling membrane
TapeWorm
Parasitic infection that resides in human intestines & feedson it Cause/Risk: Consuming raw/ undercooked meat, high risk regions, lack of sanitation
Symp: Upset stomach, Nausea, Diarrhea, weight loss
Treat: Medication Raw garlic consumption
Small Pox
contagious Viral infection spreads through body Cause/Risks: Airbone, through Saliva, infected fluids from sores, in proximity of someone infected Sympt: Fever, Aches, Rashes/ Lesions
Treatment: Vaccinated, antiviral drugs, eradication
Rabbit Fever
a highly infectious disease from bacteria
Cause/Risk: Bug/tick bites, containment food or water consumption
Symp: Skin Ulcers, Weakened Immune, Inflamed eyes
Treat: Incubation. antibiotics, oral meds
Rabies
Spread through contact with wild animals affecting CNS Cause/Risk: Mucous Membrane, Contagious Close Contact, Animal Bites, Symp: Headaches, Fever, Anxiety, Cardiac Arrest
Treat: Vaccine dose, Stay away from Wild animals, wound care
Polio
a disabling life threatening disease caused by Poliovirus Cause/Risk: Contact w infected feces, Poor handwashing, Cough
Symp: Sore throat, Paralysis, Fever, Nausea
Treat: No Cure, Pain Relievers, Physical Therapy
Pneumonia
Affects lower respiratory: Infection of the lungs Cause/Risk:Smoking, Bacterial Infection, Virus Infection
Symp: Cough With mucous, SOB, Low energy & fatigue
Treat: Antibiotics, Time resting, Oxygen Therapy
Mumps Porotitis
Affects salivery & Paratoid glands spread through infected saliva Cause/Risk: Physical Contact, Touching saliva of infected, Contagious Symp: Fever, Headache, chewing difficulty
Treat: Drinking fluids, Gargling fluids
Immunities
Adaptive Immune Response
Response of the body to specific pathogens. Includes; Cellular and Humoral Response
Cellular Immune Response
Response through cell to cell contact, Includes Helper, Cytotoxic T cells, & memory T cells
Humoral Immune Respone
B cell becomes activated and produce a clone of cells when it encounters an antigen Includes: B cells, Helper T cells, Cytokines, antibodies, memory B cells
Artificial Immunity
immunity given to the body( Vaccines, meds)
Passive Immunity
Given antibodies foreignly rather than producing them (mother to child)
Active Immunity
Immune system produces own antibodies to fight antigens
