Formation of the EU
- European Coal and Steel Community (1951) - Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands and West Germany create a supranational institution to decide how much coal and steel each country produces
- European Economic Community (1957) - through the treaty of Rome, the six countries of the ECSC set up a common market
- Expansion of the EEC (1973) - Denmark, Ireland and the UK join the EU
- The Single European Act (1986) - creation of the single market and attempted elimination of non-tariff barriers to trade
- Establishment of the EU (1993) - after the Maastricht Treaty, the single market is completed with the 'four freedoms' of movement of goods, services, people and money
- Establishment of the Schengen Area (1995) - as part of the free movement of people, passport controls at frontiers are removed
- Introduction of Euro notes and coins in the Eurozone (2002) - twelve states begin using the same physical currency
Key treaties and agreements
- Rome Treaty (1957) - set up the EEC
- Single European Act (1986) - creation of the single market
- Maastricht Treaty (1992) - established the EU, included further integration and cooperation, gave greater powers to the European parliament
- European Constitution (2004) (withdrawn) - intended to replace all previous treaties into one document
- Lisbon Treaty (2007) - gave more powers to the Commission and parliament
