Genetic Screening - Coggle Diagram
Genetic Screening
Screening Babies
-
Heel Prick Test:
- allows treatments to start almost from birth
-
Screening Adults
This is to identify adults of genetic diseases and is only usually done if there is a history of the genetic disease
The results of the test allow potential parents to make informed decisions about trying for a family
-
Ethical Frameworks
Utilitarianism: maximising the amount of good in the world e.g. the greater good
E.g. Banting & Best - a lot of dogs were killed in the experiment however the findings save thousands more dogs and humans compared to those who died
Making decisions for yourself: (informed consent)
- if informed consent is not given it is unethical
E.g. dogs cannot give consent to be tested on
Both amniocentesis & CVS have risks of:
- False Positives -> could lead to termination of a healthy embryo
- False negatives -> result is a baby being born with a painful/life shortening illness
These false results can be due to mistakes but also not all alleles for a disease are tested for, just the most common
