Feudal Hierachy
- KING: granted land to tenants-in-chief.
- TENANTS-IN-CHIEF: most were nobles or important clergy eg. bishops. Paid homage + provided knight service/scutage to the king.
- UNDER TENANTS: knights or lesser clergy. Paid homage + provided knight service to their lord. Many were lords of a manor.
- FREE MEN: could travel anywhere but villagers had to obey + pay rent to their lord. Paid for working on lord/king's land.
- PEASANTS/VILLEINS: around 1/2 population. Provided labour service to lord in return for protection, shelter + a strip of land. Could be bought + sold.
