Printing has greatly expanded the amount of reading material available to individuals in general. Before, there wasn't much of an opportunity to read anything. People frequently had little else to read than notice boards posted in churches. Informational booklets, travel guides, poetry collections, romantic novels, histories of art and architecture, food and medical recipes, maps, posters, cartoons, and sheet music were just a few of the many innovative and fascinating possibilities made possible by the printing press. Though they were still not as inexpensive as they are now, books only cost around one-eighth of what a handmade book would.
