1939:the war became worldwide. Britain retreated its troops to Dunkirk, where its forces were isolated.
1940: Hitler planned the invasion of Britain (operation Sea Lion), at first won by Britain but then the german "Blitz" forced Britain to resist within the devastation and death.
in Africa general Rommel (g) forced the British army to retreat, while Hitler declared war on URSS (operation Barbarossa). in 1941 Japan bombed the US in Pearl Harbor, so the US joined the war.
the German army was defeated by the URSS forces; many new science discoverys helped winning the war (Enigma code breaking PC); in 1944 D-Day in Normandy, Auschwitz camp was liberated by URSS, Hitler committed suicide, the war ended on 8 may 1945 but the atomic bomb was released in august.

direct --> the characters mind is given directily and the narrator seems disappeared. James Joyce used this type of interior monologue and created three more kinds: the two levels of narration (one external and one internal, mix of third person narration and inner time), the mind level of narration (the characters thoughts flow freely) and the extreme interior monologue (the narration takes place in the mind of the character while dreaming).
indirect --> the narrator mantains logical and grammatical organization, the character stays fixed in space while his mind muves freely.
