Background
Asthma is a chronic condition that affects about 1 in 10 people. Even though there are treatments for asthma, the problem is that some people do not use their inhalers correctly.
To help people measure out the correct dosage of asthma medication, spacer devices such as Aerochamber and Breath-a-Tech had been developed. However, these didn’t seem to address the fundamental problem, which is that children often find the recommended breathing technique difficult.
Sample
-
They were recruited from seven paediatric or GP clinics within a 51km radius of Perth, Australia.
Findings/conclusions
50% children har achieved four or more breath cycles per delivery with their previous asthma device compared to 80% with the funhaler
Attitudes- 10% of parents said they were happy with their child’s previous inhaler device while 61% said this about the funhaler
-
Aims
To show the use of a novelty spacer device, ‘Funhaler’, can provide positive reinforcement, which leads to improved adherence in young asthmatics
