Consumer demand in the UK affects what is imported from other countries. Consumers want out of season and exotic food available all year round. The UK imports food like this from places like Kenya and the Caribbean. This means that land previously used to produce food for local people is now used to provide high value food products for people in the UK. High value foods and ingredients can fetch retail prices that are up to five times those of similar products. The high value may be due to the product itself, such as Madagascan vanilla, specialist honeys and gourmet coffees, or because they are luxury items available out of season that are in high demand. The cost of these products to the UK consumer is high, but there is also costs for the people in Kenya.
