Riordan, R. (2005). The Lightning Thief. New York, NY. Hyperion Books.
Setting
This story is set in the modern world, but in an altered reality where Greek Gods are real, and they have half-blood Demi-god children living in the world. These children, unable to exist normally in the modern world, end up living and training at a camp run by Dionysus. The camp is called Camp Half-Blood.
Main Characters
Annabeth Chase
Annabeth is the Demi-god daughter of Athena and Frederick Chase, an American History Professor at West Point. Athena is a virgin God, so Annabeth is a literal "brainchild" given to her father as a gift. She is 12 years old and very intelligent.
She has a Yankees ballcap (gifted from her mother) that turns the wearer invisible.
Perseus "Percy" Jackson
Percy is the 12-year-old Demi-god son of Poseidon and Sally Jackson. He has the ability to heal using the power of water. He can also control and channel water, breathe underwater, and mentally communicate with marine animals and water nymphs.
Grover Underwood
Grover is a satyr (half goat, half human) who is Percy's best friend. Grover was undercover at Percy's old school for humans, which is where they met. He is working as a keeper, but dreams of one day acquiring his Searcher's License so he can follow in his father's footsteps to search for the Lost God Pan. Satyr's age half as fast as humans, so Grover is 28 years old, although he only looks about 13 in human years.
Plot
When Percy discovers he is the son of Poseidon, he visits the Oracle and is given a quest. He is given ten days to journey across America, go into the Underworld to retrieve Zeus's stolen Master Bolt, and return it to Mount Olympus before the Summer Solstice. He is allowed to bring Grover and Annabeth with him to help him in this quest.
Conflict
The main conflict is that someone stole Zeus's Master Bolt (the most powerful weapon on Earth) and Zeus believes it was his brother Poseidon.
During his quest to find the Master Bolt, Percy discovers another conflict: someone has stolen Hades Helm of Darkness. He also resolves this conflict.
Another smaller conflict is that the three most powerful Olympians (Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades) all agreed many years ago to stop fathering Demi-god children. When Percy shows up and Poseidon claims him as his son, the secret world of Olympians and half-gods is rocked by this broken vow.
Resolution
Percy, Annabeth, and Grover complete Percy's quest and solve the riddle of the Oracle that Percy was given. Percy recovers and returns the stolen Helm of Darkness and the Master Bolt back to Hades and Zeus. Grover receives his Searchers License and begins his search for The Lost God Pan.
Theme
The main theme of The Lightning Thief is trust. Percy learns to trust himself and his own abilities, the Gods put their trust in a Demi-god (who succeeds in his quest), and Annabeth learns to trust someone new (Percy).
