Responsibility in An Inspector calls
Sheila
Socialist - changes her views throughout the play : from 'mummy' to 'mum' shows that she starts to gain independence and disagree with her parents.
shows the generation gap - as she gains independence // showing the newer views of society or influencing what they should be
the first to accept responsibilitaly for what she did
actually seems to care about eva smith
Gives back Gerald's ring (going against family and society) after realising he is unfaithful as a capitalist in a patriotic society (this was regular at the time so he was sticking to the norms of the time). This links to generation gap and gender
Eric
Takes responsibility for what he did to Eva
wanted to give her money to help
stole the money from Mr Birling's office
wanted to help her
Shows gender gap as he forces himself on Eva (shows the patriarchal society they live in)
As he grew up in a capitalists society he thinks that money will fix everything
doesnt feel like he can turn to his father for help
"my father is not the type of father you could go to when you're in trouble"
His father never even took responsibility for his children // Eric turned to alcohol
even though his parents are capitalist, at the end of the play he seems to reflect more socialist views // generation gap
Gerald
tried to help her then left her
doesn't take responsibility after figuring out Eva didn't die
looking for other solutions as he doent want to take responsibility
goes back to how he was before
capitalist
the engagement between him and Sheila seems to be more for busines than their happines
Gerald's father has crofts limited busines and having the marriage between the families will help unite the businesses
doesn;'t care about happiness but only cares about money and business
Disguised himself as a hero but really had bad intentions
"the wonderful fairy prince" -Sheila
Mr Birling
seems to care more about his business more than his family
dramatic irony
"unsinkable... absolutely unsinkable"
"The Germans don't want war. Nobody wants war"
refuses to give his workers (Eva) more pay
chooses to firer her instead
doesnt think about what the consequences may be
was middle class and married up
Mrs Birling
doesn't take responsibility
tries to make someone take responsibility for her
says that the man who got her pregnant should take responsibility not knowing she is taking about her son
refuses to help eva - 'girls of that class'
shows she did not know what the consequences would be for her actions
class divide
she is upper class and married down to become more middle class and doesnt tjink about any of the other classes
Shows generation gap as the older people don't care for trying to better themselves or others while the younger people do care and want to take responsibility for what they've done
doesn't take responsibility when Eva needed help
Inspector
Priestley's self insert (shows his socialist views)
wants to help the lowers class people in society
social responsibility
is he a ghost/not real? // hence the name 'Goole'
Eva
first she gets fired from Mr Birling as she asked for more pay
Gets fired from milwards due to sheilas jealousy
gets turned away by Mrs Birlings charity
changes her name from Eva Smith to Daisy Renton
Gerald tries to help her but left her
eric gets her pregnant
forces himself upon her
